Fetal Bovine Serum (FBS) is the liquid portion of blood that remains after removing the cellular fraction and coagulation factors. It is extracted after centrifuging aseptically collected coagulated fetal bovine blood. Sterile FBS is achieved through triple filtration at 0.1µm.
FBS contains proteins and growth factors essential for the maintenance and proliferation of eukaryotic cells in vitro. It also includes attachment factors that create a “coating” effect on plastic surfaces, enhancing cell adhesion. Due to its various components, FBS is essential in cell culture.
All FBS batches are tested for endotoxin and mycoplasma levels, specific viruses (BVD), hemoglobin, total protein content, and cell culture performance.
